What Is Considered a Large Diameter Hose?
A large diameter hose is a wide hose designed to accommodate large air ventilation usually in commercial sites. The term “large diameter” refers to flexible hoses with an inside diameter (ID) range of 16” to 52”, and any sizes within that range that maybe be customized when ordered. Heavy-duty applications such as agricultural, chemical processing, construction, mining, and heavy-duty air ventilation require a large diameter hose to get the maximum output from the machinery. HVAC military systems also require large ventilation machinery since they have portable and vehicle-mounted systems that can be installed in military tents field hospitals and displaced persons camps. Blowers are used to cool down equipment and machinery so that the equipment is revamped for use immediately. While there are many industrial applications for a large hose, there are also many commercial applications for these flex hoses, such as humidity control and general utility ventilation.

How Are Hose Diameters Measured?
The inside diameter (ID) is the measurement of a straight line from one point of a flex hose’s inner wall, through its center, and to the opposite inner wall. It should not be confused with the outside diameter (OD), which is the measurement of a straight line from the outside edge of a flex hose across the center and to the opposite outer edge. The outside diameter also takes into account the wall thickness of a hose and this adds to the overall size. Since duct hoses are fit over a pipe, their inside diameter is what matters during installation. Ductwork is pulled over a pipe and is installed using clamps or other mechanical implements.
Academically, diameter is defined as twice the length of the radius of a circle. The radius is measured from the center of a circle to one endpoint on the boundary of the circle. The distance of diameter is measured from one end of the circle to a point on the other end of the circle, passing through the center. A common misconception when measuring flex hoses is that the best way to measure them is by finding their circumference. Circumference refers to the enclosed boundary of the circle. The main reason why measuring the circumference of a flexible hose is an inefficient means is because it only refers to the distance of the outside perimeter of a flexible hose and doesn’t account for the channel size of the flex hose where air, fumes, and materials flow through. If you measure a duct or a flex hose by its circumference, you risk purchasing a large diameter flexible hose that does not fit the channel size of your machinery and ventilation system. Since inside diameter of the hose fits over the outside diameter of a pipe, these two dimensions must be equal. An 8-inch inside diameter hose fits over an 8-inch outside diameter pipe.

Does Increasing Duct Size Increase Air Flow?
While increasing duct size can potentially increase air flow, it depends on several other factors, such as the length of your ductwork and the overall output of the large duct fan and ventilation system. If you increase the duct size without adjusting the overall output from your large duct fan, the air will become lost during the transfer from the source to the destination. On the other hand, if your ductwork is too small, simply increasing the output from your large flex fan will not increase its effectiveness. Instead, small ductwork will restrict airflow due to high friction loss, resulting in your large flex fan/HVAC system generating more noise, energy consumption, and wear and tear. Regardless of whether your ducting is too large or too small, improper duct sizes will reduce airflow, so your duct needs to have the proper CFM (cubic feet per minute) measurement to determine the HVAC system’s airflow effectively. Does Hose Diameter Affect CFM?
The hose diameter is crucial in determining the flex hose’s CFM (cubic feet per minute). Changing the inside diameter (ID) of your flex hose will change the pressure throughout the hose and, in doing so, will change the overall density of air volume as it is being transferred from the source to the end. While measuring CFM of airflow through a flex hose or ductwork can be a complex calculation, the rule of thumb for determining CFM for your tools and machinery is that for each 1 CFM of airflow, you need 1 square inch of duct area. So handheld devices such as spray guns tend to require 1-3 CFM and will work perfectly well with a 6mm hose. In the case of large industrial machinery and applications, the higher the CFM requirement of your machinery is, the larger the diameter hose you’ll need to have proper airflow and ventilation. No matter what kind of flex hose size you choose for your large diameter ducting needs, it is vital that you have accurate CFM measurements so that your machinery is effective.

Is Bigger Ductwork Better?

While bigger ductwork can allow more airflow and materials to be transferred through, unless it is matched with the proper requirements of your equipment, it will only create more problems than solutions.
