The “HVAC Insulated-Flex R-8” is an insulated air duct designed for use in air conditioning applications. This insulated flexible duct has an R-Value of 8, which is highly prized for use in installations that require the maximum energy savings from an HVAC duct. The “HVAC Insulated-Flex R-8” is sold in four I.D. (inside diameter) sizes and in twenty-five foot lengths. Being available in 4, 6, 8 and 12-inch diameters, makes this hose an excellent choice for almost any type of air ventilation use. In addition to thermal insulation, the thicker and more dense insulation wrap offers excellent acoustical insulation properties. Combining exceptional acoustical performance with an R-Value of 8 makes this Insulated flexible ductwork superior to others on the market. This flexible duct has a temperature range of -20 Fahrenheit to + 160 Fahrenheit. Aesthetically the hose is metallic silver with a yellow insulation duct wrap.
This hose benefits from being a flexible ductwork. Flexible ducts are far easier to install than rigid duct hoses. Since HVAC installations generally lead from an exterior roof or outdoor area into the interior of a building, they make their ways through drop ceilings, attics, or crawl spaces. For air conditioning ducts to make their way through the labyrinth of a building, the ducting needs to bend and turn its way from above and across any structural objects that may be situated on the way. In order for a rigid metal duct to get through such hurdles it may need accessories like elbow, reducers or other connectors. This flexible insulated air duct can twist and turn its way through almost any crawl space and can even compress and expand to reduce the need for fabrication of the hose during installation. The “HVAC Insulated-Flex R-8” has a 5 to 1 compression ratio and can expand 5 times its packaged length. The hose can compress and expand as needed so as to fit the needs of the installation.
This insulated flexible ductwork slows the heat transfer that may be in place between the interior of the hose (i.e., air conditioned air) and exterior of the duct (i.e., exterior temperature level). This insulated air duct reduces convection and uses materials and layers that have low thermal conductivity. Convection is the movement of air driven by differences in temperature between two areas. Convection works by moving heated air from a warmer area to a space colder than its surroundings. These temperature differences then cause the air to move as the hotter, less dense air rises, and the cooler, more dense air sinks. To reduce heat transfer by convection, a duct’s insulating material should contain small cavities of air pockets within. These air pockets serve to confine temperature differences and ensure that air movement is minimized.

Our Expert’s Opinion
Robert, an experienced team member, has this to say
Pros
High R-Value: 8 R-Value offer excellent insulation
Stocked Hose: In stock in large quantities
Highly compressible: Even though insulated, the hose is very flexible and compressible
Acoustical qualities: thick insulation wrap reduces sound
Insulation: about as thick of insulation as available off the shelf
Cons
Flexing: Not recommended for continuous flexing
Light Duty: Not as heavy duty as PVC coated ducts
Limited Length Options: Only available in 25 footers
